Leonor Fini
1908 Buenos Aires - 1996 Paris
Leonor was born in Buenos Aires, where her father established as a successful businessman. However, her mother Malvina Brown Dubich, with South Slavic, German and Venetian ancestors, left the tyrannical husband one night as Leonor was just 1 year olf and went back to her home town of Trieste (Italy).
As an imaginative and stubborn child she begins very early to draw and paint continuously and experimenting with colors and organic matter that she incorporated into her paintings. She never had an academic training. 1923 Leonor received a school references for insubordination, and creates a self-taught and using their family libary. In 1925 she moved to Milan where she began to paint portraits on commissions and had her first exhibition. There, she met the painter Giorgio de Chirico and Carra.

However, she never beccame a member of the Surrealists, because she is far too freedom-loving and independent, and didn't aprreciated the authoritarian dogma of André Bretons' "laws".

But Leonor was not only a painter and illustrator, but also wrote and illustrated books, and since the early 40th years she worked a distinctive look with great success as a stage and costume designer in Rome, Milan and Paris and gave actors, operas and ballets.

I once saw a movie biography about her and I've never seen so much originality and lived eccentricity before and that made me very intrigued. She also liked to dress in theatrical robes, but not as a display of her outrageness in front of others, but simply because she was like this. One can dismiss it as "normally is easy for everybody". Animals played a special role for her, especially cats from which she had partly 17.

Whether one likes her paintings and illustrations which are owned in the fantastic and surrealistic world who oscillate between gloomy obscurity to delicate sweet pastel paintings or not is another matter, but as an artist Leonor Fini personality is certainly unusual and special.
